Doctrine and History

About Us:

Our church is appropriately named “Evangelical.” Evangelical means that we hold a high view of Scripture while simultaneously encouraging unity amongst all Christians. We believe that baptism (either infant or adult) is a sign that in Christ we have all become one body, and signifies entrance into the community of God’s people. We also invite all who confess Christ to participate in communion. Our church seeks to major on the majors, and minor on the minors. Even if we disagree on minor points of doctrine, we all hold to the following core doctrines of the Christian faith.

►We believe the 66 books of the Bible are the inspired Word of God, the Holy Spirit having superintended the writing by godly men. (2 Tim. 3:16, 2 Pet. 1:21)

►We believe the one eternal God exists in three persons, equal in deity, differing in roles, revealed in Scripture as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Duet. 6, Matt. 28:18-20)

►We believe that God created all things perfectly, but that Adam (the first man) chose to disobey God bringing judgment upon himself and all of mankind.  (Gen. 3, Rom 3:10-19)

►We believe that since sin entered the world by one man’s disobedience, that God, out of love, would restore the world through One Man’s obedience.  That One Man is the Lord Jesus, eternally existing as the Son of God having become Son of Man through the virgin Mary.  (Rom. 5)

►We believe man cannot earn salvation by good works but that God offers salvation by grace alone through faith in Jesus’ sinless obedience and willing sacrifice to pay the debt of man’s sins.  Having offered Himself for our sins, He rose from the dead conquering death.  (Eph. 2:8-9, 1 Cor. 15:3-4)

►We believe the Apostle’s Creed is a good, historic and faithful expression of our Christian faith and use it regularly in our worship service.

►We believe in two sacraments—baptism, which is a visible expression of our union with Jesus in His death, burial and resurrection indicating that we are to walk in ‘newness of life’ (Rom. 6:1-11); and, the Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion) which reminds us of the cost He paid for our redemption, (Matt. 26:26-29).  We practice both adult and infant baptism.  We invite all believers to share at the Lord’s Supper.

►We practice confirmation of youth to help them understand by the Bible their relationship to the Father through Jesus and their responsibility in the church and to the world.

►We support and encourage the family, believing God ordained and blesses marriage between a man and a woman.  (Gen. 2, Heb. 13:4)

Membership:

Our church welcomes all who believe in Jesus Christ to become members. Membership is important for a number of practical and theological reasons.

First, membership helps everyone to know who is committed to the church. Members pledge to attend worship regularly, to participate in communion, to contribute financial and moral support to the maintenance of the church. Members all recognize that the sole head of the church is Jesus Christ.

Second, membership is important to establish the official workings of the church. Our church has a congregational form of church government. This means that we believe there exists no human authority higher than the local church.  It is necessary to know who is a member in order to know who can vote on issues of budget, personnel, and church office. Thus each member, confessing and submitting to Christ, contributes to the workings of the church as best as able. This also is the reason we withhold membership from those who do not confess Christ, so that our opinions are always subordinate to the will of God.

Thirdly, membership helps us to hold one another accountable to live the Christian life. Our church constitution has provisions for discipline in the case of those who are bringing disrepute upon God’s church by living outside of accordance with the Word of God. This is a rare occurrence – discipline will only happen in the presence of consistent, public, and unrepentant sin. This theological principle shows up in multiple biblical passages, most importantly Matthew 18:16-20 and 1 Corinthians 5:1-8.

Lastly, we recommend that all who are Christians become members of a church in order to serve God fully. It is in the context of a local church that Christians gather together to glorify Christ and serve in his name. Some spiritual gifts are impossible to exercise outside of a community of faith, such as the gifts of encouragement, teaching, or leadership. The Bible says that each individual has a spiritual gift, enabling them for service in God’s Kingdom (1 Corinthians 12:4-11 and Ephesians 4:8).

Mission:

"Having a real relationship with God, real realationships with each other, and making a real impact in our community."

Mission answers the question: “What has God sovereignly brought together in this group of people in this particular place to accomplish for his kingdom?” Fundamentally, our church seeks to serve others in the same way that Jesus served as our example on this earth.

First, Jesus served us by proclaiming the Gospel to a lost world. In the same way, we seek to learn what the Gospel means for us through the Sunday morning preaching, Sunday School, Women’s Group Programs, special study groups, and speakers. We spend time in prayer and the Scripture before each Board Meeting as we seek to align ourselves with God’s heart, revealed through the Scriptures. We also support two missionaries with prayer and through our yearly offering at Mission Fest.

Second, Jesus served us by meeting the physical needs of people. In the same way, we have a number of projects that involve giving time, talent and money to help meet the physical needs of those in our community and beyond. Most notably is our “Need Family Offering” that hands out thousands of dollars to poor families around Christmas time. We donate to Moniteau County Food Pantry and support the Jamestown Youth Mission Trip, the Salvation Army and other charitable organizations. A significant portion of our church budget goes to outside of our church charities.

Lastly, Jesus served us by meeting the emotional needs of the lonely, sick, and elderly. We regularly visit those among us in times of distress and loss, seeking to support them as best as we can with friendship or a hug. For us at Moniteau, it is a great joy to share not only the highs but also the lows of life together. We want to live out the words of the Jesus: “This is how all mankind will know that you are my disciples, if you  love one another.” We seek to love one another and extend that love to everyone as best as we are able.
